A sexual abuse lawsuit has been filed by five women who were being held in the Riverhead Jail, a Suffolk County Correctional Facility in New York. The lawsuit is against both the jail and a former guard at the jail. The sexual abuse lawsuit alleges that the women, who had been detained at the Riverhead Jail at some point between April 2009 and August 2010 as they awaited trial, were all sexually abused by the same male guard.
This sexual abuse lawsuit also alleges that officials at the jail either ignored the women’s complaints of sexual abuse or threatened the women with retaliation if they kept filing complaints and bringing attention to the matter. According to documents associated with the complaint, more than 40 other individuals that had been detained at the Riverhead Jail during this time period had also allegedly been victimized by the former male guard but have not come forward with their sexual abuse allegations due to their fear of retribution.

Sexual Abuse Lawsuit Filed Against Riverhead Jail
This recently filed sexual abuse lawsuit is among the latest scandals to taint the reputation of the Suffolk County Correctional Facility. In fact, within the past year, two inmates held at the Riverhead Jail have died. While jail officials have stated that no foul play, accidents or strange events were associated with the death of one inmate who passed in February 2013, another inmate who died at the facility in June 2012 allegedly choked to death because he was not administered appropriate medical attention in a timely manner.
In another scandal surrounding the Suffolk County Correctional Facility, the New York Civil Liberties Union filed a lawsuit against the Suffolk County Correctional Facility in April 2012, alleging that officials have been subjecting inmates to grotesque and particularly inhumane conditions. Among the specific inhumane conditions at this facility were overcrowding, contaminated drinking water, rampant rodent infestation and raw sewages leaks in the sleeping areas. This lawsuit has been filed on behalf of more than 100 inmates, and lawyers representing the plaintiffs have declined to provide further details on the conditions of the jail due to the pending lawsuit.
