Sexual Abuse Lawsuit Filed Against Connecticut Boarding School, Hotchkiss

Sexual Abuse Lawsuit Filed Against Another Connecticut Boarding School Alleges Hotchkiss Knew Of Ongoing Sexual Assault

Child-Sexual-Abuse-Lawsuit-LawyersA private boarding school residing in Lakeville, Connecticut is facing a sexual abuse lawsuit filed in Connecticut federal court. The incident resulting in the lawsuit comes from the mid-1980s when an alleged sexual assault occurred involving multiple students and a teacher. The Hotchkiss Boarding school was accused of allowing a young boy to not only be sexually assaulted by multiple students but also fondled and raped by a teaching member of the staff.

Sexual Abuse Alleged at Hotchkiss

According to CT News, a New York resident claimed the plaintiff, referred to only as “John Doe” in the sexual abuse lawsuit, was a small 14-year-old boy when groups of older students ritualistically sexually assaulted and hazed him. The lawsuit claims this particular event was a common occurrence for many years at the school, and one known by officials and staff members at Hotchkiss. It also alleges the plaintiff had reported the assaults to staff members only for them to in return ask him “if his bottom was feeling better,” the suit reads. Also stated in the suit, the plaintiff at 15-years-old was drugged and then raped by a faculty member known at the school as “Uncle Roy.” It specifically states the defendant drugged the plaintiff, “into semi-unconsciousness with a pill that he misrepresented as an aspirin”. An article for the student newspaper about the failure of the school to properly conduct investigations into the complaints of students was written by the plaintiff himself. However, the article’s publication was forbidden by the school headmaster, and the headmaster was even said to have “conspired to prevent John from informing the students, their parents and the school community about Smith’s sexual assault and his aberrant and predatory propensities and behavior,” according to the suit. Prior Connecticut Boarding School Sex Abuse Lawsuits

Another prestigious private boarding school also residing in Lakeville, The Indian Mountain School, faced two similar sexual abuse lawsuits within a few months prior to the Hotchkiss lawsuit. The lawsuits against The Indian Mountain School include the alleged sexual assault and rape of multiple young students by school faculty members, just as the case against Hotchkiss. The Indian Mountain School’s headmaster has said he finds the allegations to be shocking and disheartening.

Hotchkiss claims the behavior described in the sexual abuse lawsuit is not only repulsive but absolutely contrary to the values of the school from the beginning to this moment now. They claim that the healthy relationships among students, and students and staff are the foundation of the experiences found at the school, and ensure their commitment to the wellbeing and safety of the students has always been absolute. Later on, the school’s website hosted a statement posted by officials, “We are working with an independent law firm to investigate these claims fully. Because the reported events occurred almost thirty years ago, and involved people long gone from our community, a thorough investigation may take some time. To be clear, these allegations have not been substantiated, and we have no independent knowledge of the substance of these claims. In that light, please be assured that we are committed to proceeding with urgency, seriousness, and compassion.”
